Russell Burns

Russell M. Burns, 76, of rural Ipava, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 1992, at home.

He was born May 2, 1916, in Center Point, Ind., the son of Jonas and Lola Nicson Burns. He first married Teressa Kirchner. He later married Dorothy Reffett in 1949. She died Nov. 13, 1989.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, Robert of West Terre Haute, Ind., and Albert Marion of Brazil, Ind.; one daughter, Lula Fryman of Salina, Okla.; one stepson, Charles Stackman of Staunton, Ind.; one stepdaughter, Rita Sue Deubert of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Dean of Port Arthur, Tex., and Don of Richmond, Ind.; four sisters, Helen Layne of Columbus, Ind., Lois Kaeler of Richmond, Ind., Ruth Langdon of Greencastle, Ind., and Mildred Spurgin of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He worked as a coal miner for more than 40 years, until retiring in 1986. He was a member of Astoria Masonic Lodge 100, the Order of Eastern Star 450 of Boonville, Ind., and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville, Ind. He was also a member of the HADI Temple AAONMS and the order of Amaranth, both in Evansville, and the Treeing Walker Breeders and Fanciers Assn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. James Shirley officiating. Masonic services were held at the funeral home Monday evening. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.
