Betty M. Wingerter, 89, of Canton, formerly of Astoria, died May 14, 2024, at Farmington Village in Farmington.
She was born April 11, 1935, in Havana, a daughter of Adolph and Edna Hickman Niederer. She first married Richard Stage on Feb. 18, 1957, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 2013. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gerald Wingerter. He preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 2011.
She also was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Towery.
Surviving are her children, Robbin (and Jodie) Kost of Canton, Richard (and Vicki) Stage of Dunfermline, Ronald (and Donna) Stage of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rodney (and Therasa “Terry”) Stage of Hopedale; one stepson, Robert Wingerter of Florida; one brother, Don (and Delores) Niederer of Clinton; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She had a variety of jobs throughout her long life, including but not limited to medical secretary at OSF, Graham Hospital, Mason District Hospital, Culbertson Hospital, and Dr. Cercone, educational secretary at Spoon River College, and fan club secretary to Steve Hall and Shotgun Red of Brainerd, Minn. She was an election judge for many years, and the Astoria Town Clerk for 20 years.
Cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana on Saturday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
