James M. Wickert, 87, of Canton died at 11:35 p.m. April 11, 2022, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born Nov. 6, 1934, on the Wickert family farm in rural Ipava, a son of Harry and Bessie McCarty Wickert. He first married Beatrice Schisler and they had two daughters, Becky (and Montie) Wilcoxen and Shellie (and Perri) Green, both of Canton. He later married Judy Heffren on April 1, 1985, in Lewistown becoming “Pop” to Jefferey (and Lita) Harris of Matanza Beach and James “Scott” (and Mo) Harris of Galva. He was grandpa to 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Judy on Feb. 16, 2022. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Wickert; and one sister, Jean Simmons.
He attended Ipava schools. He served in the United States Army stationed at Korea. After being discharged from the Army, he started his career at Caterpillar working there until his retirement. He later worked as a funeral assistant at Henry-Lange Memorial Homes for over 25 years. He was a member of First Christian Church in Canton.
Funeral services were held Friday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Reverend Steve Mason officiating. Burial was in Apple Cemetery in rural Lewistown.
