Evelyn D. Thomas, 101, formerly of Table Grove died at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5, 2024, at the Bethea Retirement Home of Darlington, S.C.
She was born April 13, 1923, in Astoria, the daughter of Arley and Marvel Brainard Batterton. She married Claire L. Thomas on March 12, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death on March 17, 2009.
She also was preceded in death by two sons, Randall Thomas and Norman Thomas; one grandson, Bradley Thomas; and three brothers, Virgil Batterton, Sheldon Batterton, and an infant brother Cordell Batterton.
Surviving are one son, Keith (and Phyllis) Thomas of Manning, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kirk Thomas, Ketra (and Dale) Miller and Kary (and Amy) Thomas; and four great-grandchildren, Claira Miller, McKenzie Thomas, Jimmy Dale Miller and Hannah Miller.
She was a devoted farm wife for years but later was employed by the VIT Junior/Senior High School as a cook from 1972-90 when she retired. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 40 years. She also was an active member of Table Grove Christian Church.
She moved to Florence, S.C., in 2015 to live with her son Keith, later she moved to the Bethea Retirement Home in Darlington, S.C.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Ipava Cemetery in Ipava. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
