Charles Shelts, 91, of Rushville died March 24, 2026, at the Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Feb. 17, 1935, the son of the late Leonard and Nettie Vance Shelts in Huntsville Township. He married Betty Diseron in December, 1954. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Steve Shelts (and Peggy) of Winchester, Jane Billingsley (and Regie) of Macomb and Scott Shelts of Littleton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
He went to Camden Grade School and graduated from Rushville High School Class of 1954. He started working at the McCelland Standard service station in Rushville in 1954 then went to Amax Coal in 1977 until they closed in 1983, then worked at Vermont Mine for six years. After that, he went to Southern Illinois to work underground coal mining for 13 years.
He was a Deacon for the Rushville First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and a member of the Rushville Lions Club. He also helped farm in the spring and fall.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, at 10 a.m. at the Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Pastor Jerry Marzolf officiating. Burial followed at the Rushville City Cemetery.
