Charles Buddy Maxwell, 82, of Murphysboro died July 27, 2024, with loved ones present.
He was born Jan. 12, 1942, in Bluff City, a son of John and Verna Sackman Maxwell. He married Pat Davis on Aug. 16, 1968, in Rushville. She preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 1990.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, Fritz; and one stepdaughter, Julie Simpson.
Surviving are one sister, Linda (and Larry) Runkle; five brothers, Robert (and Marna), Terry (and Oma), Steve (and Elizabeth), Laverne (and Janet) and Monty (and Dorothy); one stepdaughter, Brenda Smedley; one step grandson, Ryan Herter; several nieces and nephews; and good friend, Judith Ann Tweedy, and her daughters and grandchildren.
He attended grade school in Browning and graduated from Rushville High School in 1960. After high school, he worked at the Sunshine Store in Astoria.
In 1964, he entered service in the United States Army, where he served as a meteorologist until being honorably discharged in 1969. He went on to work as a foreman/“pit boss” at Amax Coal, and after moving to Southern Illinois, he served in the role of Superintendent of Reclamation at Arch Coal until his retirement.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rushville City Cemetery with Rev. Stacey Tomich officiating and Military honors by Schuyler American Legion Post #4 and U.S. Army Honors Detail. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of service at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boys Town, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 6801; a charitable organization he believed in and supported.
