ELIZABETH (BUCHEN) LOCKWOOD

Canton Woman Fatally Hurt In Car Accident

Mrs. Elizabeth Lockwood, 82, of Canton, was fatally injured Wednesday in the collision of an ambulance in which she was riding and a truck, about a mile and a half south of Canton on Routes 78-100.

She was being taken to a nursing home in Havana when the accident occurred. She died several hours later.

Injured in the crash were Don Sturgeon, 42, driver of the ambulance; Neil Baxter Sr., 70, of Canton, Mrs. Lockwood’s brother-in-law; and Frank Ruffey, 47, of Elmwood, driver of the truck.

The accident occurred, police said, when an automobile, operated by Mrs. Raymond Mercey of St. David, and traveling in front of the ambulance, apparently developed engine trouble. Her husband, Dr. Mercey, is Fulton County coroner and will conduct the inquest.

Police were told the Mercey machine began to zig zag across the highway and came to a sudden stop in front of the ambulance. To avoid a crash, Sturgeon swerved the ambulance and it collided with the Ruffey truck.

Mrs. Lockwood was thrown from the cot and over a jump seat in the ambulance.
