Donald E. Johnson, 50, of Astoria, Superintendent of Astoria Community School District No. 1, died at 2:19 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Culbertson Hospital in Rushville where he had been a patient for the past few days. He had been in ill health for several months.
Mr. Johnson was born at Monmouth, April 10, 1924, the son of Ralph and Grace Olson Johnson. He married Marianne Ray in Astoria, June 9, 1955. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Jay, and one daughter, Kimberly, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Grace Johnson of Roseville; two sisters, Mrs. Ann McIntyre of Tucson, Ariz. and Mrs. Sandra Kroster of Roseville; and a brother, William Johnson of Roseville.
He was employed by the school district for the past 25 years, the past several years as Superintendent.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Monmouth, a charter member of Cameron American Legion Post 1158, charter member of the Astoria Lions Club, member of the Western Illinois Administrators Round Table and a member of the Illinois Elementary Grade Association. He was a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Kost Memorial Home in Vermont with Rev. James Friesner of the Astoria United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Astoria Cemetery.
