VeteranNellie Baumgartner Of Peoria Dies

Mrs. Nellie Baumgartner, 78, of 4707 N. Clarewood Ave., Peoria, died at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 1985, in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, after having been a patient for nine days.

Born in Fulton County on March 4, 1907, she was a daughter of Charles F. and Alice (Brooks) Smith. She married Herbert Baumgartner in Peoria on Feb. 15, 1964.

She was a member of the Bryant United Methodist Church and the Friendship Club of the First Christian Church, Peoria. She served as a staff sergeant in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Surviving, besides her husband, are two stepsons, James Baumgartner of Marquette Heights and Jerry Baumgartner of Decatur; a stepdaughter, Joanne Hose of Winnebago; nine step-granddaughters; five step-grandsons; and a sister, Mrs. Cecil L. “Gertie” Grove of Canton.

She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Memorial services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Cumerford-Endsley Memorial Home, Peoria, with Chaplain Howard B. Johnson and Dr. Paul J. Clark officiating. Burial was in Summum Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Hospital Hospice Program or the American Cancer Society.
