George H. Benton, 81, of Astoria died at 9:30 Thursday night at Culbertson Hospital in Rushville after an illness of about two years. He had resided most of his life in the Astoria area.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Shawgo Memorial Home at Astoria, the Rev. Forrest Wise officiating. Burial was in the Astoria Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 23, 1883 in Schuyler County, a son of Henry and Margaret Bair Benton. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Fern Carlson of Knoxville, Mrs. Freda Anderson of Galesburg and Mrs. Faye Ineloe of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Harry Benton of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters and two brothers are deceased.
Mr. Benton was a member of the Ipava Christian Church. He served as a veterinarian a number of years ago and has also been engaged in construction work and railroad work.
Mr. Benton was an uncle of Mrs. Beulah Whittenberg and Mrs. Orpha Rhoades of Astoria.
