Shop Injuries Fatal To Former Summum ManShop Injuries Fatal To Former Summum ManAn inquest will be held this week into the death of Bernard A. Baumgartner, 66 of near Cordova, who died Friday afternoon in St. Anthony’s hospital as the result of injuries incurred when he fell 20 feet from a girder to a cement floor in the Farmall works of the International Harvester Co., Rock Island, shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.
Baumgartner, an employee of L. & W. Electric Co., Rock Island, was completing an electrical connection on an assembly line and started to walk across the girder when he fell.
Coroner Leslie Banning said the man’s death was the result of a skull fracture, internal injuries and shock. He died at 3 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Baumgartner was born Sept. 11, 1889 near Summum and was reared there and in Havana. He married Cora Hamerly DeWilfond of Rock Island on Aug. 23, 1923.
A veteran of World War one, he was a member of Cordova Post 1033 of the American Legion.
Surviving are the widow; a stepson, Bert DeWilfond, Cordova; a sister, Dollie Valentine, Astoria; and a brother, Floyd Baumgartner, San Bruno, Calif.; a niece in Honolulu; two nephews in California; one nephew in Florida; a niece in Texas.
Services were held Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 2 p.m. in Knox County Memorial Chapel, Rock Island, conducted by Rev. Kenneth M. Hooe, pastor of Memorial church. Burial in Cordova cemetery.
Relatives and friends calling at the mortuary Sunday were many. Among them were: Mr. and Mrs. Ottie Valentine, Astoria; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Baumgartner, Lute Baumgartner. Floral offerings were many and beautiful and the American flag draped the casket.
