Judith Broeker
She was born March 2, 1950, in Galesburg, the daughter of Samuel Reller and Roberta Savage Broeker. Surviving are two sons, Brett (and Kelly) McCombs of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Samuel “Matt” McCombs of Vermont; two daughters, Jaime (and Bryan) Chapman of Beardstown and Angie (and Joe) Fisher of Astoria; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Samuel George Broeker. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School, Beardstown Schools with the Class of 1968, and Lincoln Land Community College. She paved the way for women in politics, becoming the first woman elected to the Beardstown City Council, where she served on several committees. She was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church in Beardstown where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She played piano for Bible School, and the organ for church services at the nursing home. In the summer months during her teenage years she played the piano for First Christian Church in Beardstown. She worked at the pool in several capacities including giving diving and swimming lessons. She devoted many years volunteering in Pony League Baseball in Beardstown, where she was known for her dedication and love for helping young athletes. She served as coach, director, scheduler and reporter for the league. She participated in several regional, sectional, and state tournaments with the league, including the Pony League World Series in Rapid City, S.D. She worked for many years in food services where she held many roles. In 1990, she joined the United States Postal Service, retiring from the federal government after 21 years with the USPS. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, 301 W. 4th St., Beardstown. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 10 a.m. to the time of services at the church. Burial will follow at the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family encourages guests to wear their favorite sports attire. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.
