Jennie Friedrich
She was born Sept. 10, 1927, in Rich Hill, Mo, a daughter of Joseph and Lois Smith Markello. On April 10, 1946, she married Clifford Phoebus in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1982. She later married Donald Friedrich on Dec. 23, 1978, in Pekin. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2024. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William Markello; and one sister, Fern Kaps. Surviving are two daughters, Joyce (and Robert) Batterton of Farmington and Cynthia (and Dennis) Ratcliff of Astoria; four stepchildren, Mark Friedrich of Deland, Fla., Jon (and Grace) Friedrich of Spring Lake, Chris Friedrich of Hannibal, Mo., and Paula Gensel of Pekin; eight grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren. She worked as a telephone operator for the city of Astoria. She then became a licensed hair stylist, owning and operating her own beauty shop in Vermont, Ill. She last worked for Witzig’s Clothing Store in Morton. She also sold Figurette clothing apparel. A service was held Monday, July 13, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Hugh Carlock officiating. Burial was in the Astoria Cemetery.
