Gene WalkerEugene “Gene” Walker, 82, died May 11, 2026, at the Illinois Presbyterian Home in Springfield.

He was born July 30, 1943, in Ipava, a son of Eugene Wayne Walker and Vivian Louise Hensley Chrysler. He was raised on a farm by his grandparents.

He was a Navy Vietnam Veteran Petty Officer 3d class 1963-67 ENT Electronics Technician serving in the Brown Waters aboard DD805 and also in Kodiak Alaska. His military story was recently interviewed in a chapter of David Grogan’s book, “Learning to Live from Those Willing to Die”. After the military, he had a long successful career at AT&T.

He was a member of VFW 755, the Navy Club and Camp 4 of the Sons of Union Veterans. He was also a member of the Civil War Springfield Soldiers Aid Society affiliated with the 114th Illinois Regiment. He also served on the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.

Memorials may be made to VFW 755.

Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.

Memorial service was held Thursday, May 21, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield with Rev. Dr. Darla Ann Kratzer officiating.

Burial followed with military honors provided by the Navy and Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
